The name Epicteet is a slave nickname meaning "purchased." The Great Roman philosopher-Stoik was born a slave, but died a free man, in a deep old age, having managed to gain loud glory and gain the protection of Emperor Hadrian himself. Like Socrates, Epictete did not leave books behind, preferring to share his wisdom in a lively conversation with faithful students. However, his instructions were recorded by others, his wise speeches were quoted in their works by eminent scientists and thus fragments of the instructions of the epictate have survived to this day. This edition publishes the translation of the “conversations” of the epictate, made by Vladimir Chertkov, close friend and like-minded Lev Tolstoy, as well as aphorisms, which are excerpts from the works of various authors, collected by the classic philosik Vasily Alekseev.
