White. The history of color. Pasturo M.
“White” is the next volume of M. Pasturo, supplementing his previous studies about the history of color in Western Europe for centuries. Giving tribute to the debates about whether the white is white, the author invites us to take into account its full chromatic status when conducting historical analysis. This time, the French medievalist wonders how white was perceived at different times: was he synonymous with colorlessness? Did you have a unequivocally positive connotation?
The book discusses different faces of white, its evolution from the color of the religious cult (analogue of the sacred) and the monarchy to the active introduction of Bely in the sports and medical spheres in recent history, as well as in the ideas about hygiene today. Pasturo pays special attention to dualism and bundle white-black and white-red, where these colors become each other's antipodes. This study sheds light on the mobile symbolism of white and on its role in different historical contexts from ancient times to the present day.
Michelle Pasturo-Medeevist historian, professor of the practical school of higher research in Paris, author of the books "Black", "Blue", "Green", "Red", "Yellow" and "Devil's Matter. History of stripes and striped fabrics ”, published in the publishing house“ UFO ”.
