The poem “To whom to live well in Rus'” turned out to be the main work of N. A. Nekrasov, the pinnacle of his work. Thinking the poem in 1863, shortly after the abolition of serfdom, the poet worked on it - with large breaks - until the last days. Nekrasov created a truly epic of national life, in which suffering is balanced by a smile, and the feeling of hopelessness of the transformation is overcome by faith in the best.
