This romance highly appreciated by critics and readers first went out of print in 2000, and was subsequently translated from Hebrew into 20 languages, including German, English, Italian, Polish and Russian. More than 1,000,000 copies of the novel were sold around the world. In 2001, Roman received a prestigious Sapira Prize (Israeli analogue of the Buker Prize). A significant part of the monetary equivalent of the Prize David donated the Elem charity organization, which organized this money to the Center for Assistance to adolescents who in a difficult situation and this center is called "who to run with." In 2001, “who to run with” received the German Buxtehuder Bulle Award. And in 2004, the influential British magazine Jewish Quarterly awarded the novel his literary prize Wingate.

In 2017, David Grossman became a laureate of the Buker Prize.
