Every fall, John Pentecost returns to the farm where he grew up. Every year he helps the family drive sheep from swamps for the winter. Little is changing in a distant village, but this year his grandfather John dies, and his wife Kat comes to the farm for the first time.

The inhabitants of Endlands protect their lands from a cunning devil with the help of stories and ancient rites. But while farmers are busy with their business, the devil is much closer than they thought.
