The textbook corresponds to the literature program for grades 5-9 (Author-Sost. G.S. Merkin), and also maintains continuity in relation to the course "Literary reading" for grades 1-4 (Author-Sost.. S. Merkin, B.G. Merkin, S.A. Bolotova). The textbook introduces schoolchildren with folklore, works of Russian and foreign literature from antiquity to the 20th century inclusive, contains textbook texts.
