The book tells about the outstanding Russian commander Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-1791, he was a student and ally of Suvorov: he participated in the storm of Ishmael, in the battles of Babadag and Machin, he was seriously wounded. On August 26, 1812, Kutuzov gave the general battle the troops of Napoleon near Borodino. He was forced to leave Moscow, but the French did not last long in the Russian capital. The defeat near Maloyaroslavets forced them to retreat along the old Smolensk road, and in this retreat, long and painful, they lost their formidable army.
